Speech delivered to the League of Women Voters
Henry David Thoreau is quoted as saying "That government is best which governs least." These words resonate with me. I believe that a core competency of government is converting a dollar's worth of tax revenue into ten cents of benefit to the public. Of course, the person that gets some of that thin dime is happy; every system of government is good for some people. The question is who (and how many) benefit.

Practically, I don't think there is much that can be done to rein in the growth and scope of government. If the Charter Government referendum passes in November, then there is great power in the hands of the Freeholders to do great good or great damage. Therefore, I am running as a single-issue candidate. If there is to be a new charter government, then the charter should include a County Ombudsman; a central point where county citizens can report fraud and waste, a government watchdog that has authority to review records and publicize findings. This position should have assured funding to prevent the established powers from defunding it.
I am convinced this is the best we can do to assure our government operates in a cost-effective manner and within constitutional limits. If you agree that the county needs an Ombudsman (watchdog) function, then cast your vote for Coffman.Ken Coffman is an Electrical Engineer and author who lives in rural Skagit County.
